Shift patterns
Here's a good site with a pattern drawn out for making a simple woman's
shift/chemise, with good directions on how to sew it up:

Mostly earlier than 1800 (colonial period), but styles didn't change that fast back then, some would still be correct for our time period - discussions of how things fit, etc., is valuable.
